"In Nature Nothing Exists Alone." - Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

Talon Ecological Research Group was founded in 2015 by like-minded individuals with the ambition of protecting imperiled wildlife species and their habitat in the greater San Francisco Bay area. Our focus is on avian species, including burrowing owls, tricolored blackbirds, and golden eagles.

As part of our mission, we foster aspiring ecologists/biologists, thereby supporting the next generation of ecosystem stewards. We offer students and recent graduates the opportunity to get fieldwork experience, promoting adaptive management skills, problem solving abilities, and critical thinking.

Our Mission

Talon Ecological Research Group is a 501c3 science-based non-profit organization with a mission to protect California’s native species and ecosystems. We implement conservation and management actions for imperiled species and their habitat. As part of our mission, we lead and foster students in environmental science education, research, and conservation, thus supporting the next generation of ecosystem stewards.

“Real biologists who actually do the research will tell you that they almost never find a phenomenon, no matter how odd or irrelevant it looks when they first see it, that doesn’t prove to serve a function.”
— Edward O. Wilson

Objectives

  • Conduct scientific research on native species and imperiled ecosystems in California, primarily in the greater San Francisco Bay area

  • Provide scientific data to public agencies

  • Implement species and habitat management plans

  • Provide opportunities for students and early-career biologists to get trained in environmental field research methods

  • Offer hands-on field experience to jump-start the career of aspiring wildlife biologists

  • Inform and educate the community and general public on wildlife-related topics

  • Work closely with management agencies and other groups with mutual goals
